In looking at Easter art, I happily re-discovered one of my favorite artists, Mikhail Nesterov (1862-1942).

There’s just something about his art that I find incredibly beautiful and powerful. I think it’s the way he combines light and dark. And then, there’s the religious content in so many of his works. Come to think of it, I’ve always felt very attracted to Russian art in general, whether music, dance, or visual art.
Explore more of Nesterov’s art.
And here is a blog dedicated to Russian art. I think I might find some additional favorite artists there…

I agree with you that Russian art is very attractive. It captures the heart in ways that Western art sometimes is not able to do.
Nesterov was one of the greatest Russian painters of his time and generation. His paintings are a window into the nation’s soul before and after the revolution. Although some people would not care for his art, it captures the simplicity and beauty of a time that can no longer be recaptured. Kind of like Eden before the Fall.
